Cricket is a very popular sport at St Philip’s School and students have taken part in programmes organised by the Lord’s Taverners charity over many years. They were delighted when a current and former student were chosen to demonstrate the sport to HRH the Duke of Edinburgh.

Year 10 student Andrew (pictured behind the Duke’s right shoulder) and James, a St Philip’s alumnus (pictured far right of the group) who now works for Surrey Cricket as a coach were both invited to the Oval cricket ground to demonstrate a specially adapted version of game for the Duke.

The Duke watched young people from the charity’s Super 1s and Wicketz programmes take part in this unique session at the Oval’s Ken Barrington Cricket Centre, before playing table cricket with four of the Youth Ambassadors.

HRH The Duke of Edinburgh very much enjoyed his first engagement with the charity after being named as Patron earlier this year. His Royal Highness, who along with his brother King Charles III has also been a President of the Taverners, is very passionate about the positive impact and opportunity offered by sport. The Duke’s patronage continues a long line of Royal support for the charity, following on from his father Prince Philip, The late Duke of Edinburgh, who became founding Patron and 12th man in 1950 – a role he held for 71 years.
