St Dominic’s School is delighted to announce that they have been awarded the Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM) which celebrates their commitment to excellence in primary science. This prestigious award recognises a commitment to developing excellence in science leadership, curriculum design, teaching and learning.

PSQM is a comprehensive year-long professional development and school improvement programme that gives primary science subject leaders the knowledge, capability and support needed to improve the quality and profile of science education across the entire school.

Helen Sizer, PSQM Director said: “The Primary Science Quality Mark recognises a whole school commitment to raising the profile and quality of science education, helping children recognise the value and relevance of science in their lives – both now and in the future.  Achievement of the Quality Mark reflects the development of effective science leadership, visionary curriculum design and excellent teaching practice which is positively impacting on children’s learning across the school.  We have been impressed by the dedication of subject leaders, teachers, headteachers, pupils, parents, and governors alike – they all have reason to be incredibly proud.”

The school received glowing feedback from the reviewer who had supported the team on their journey to achieving the PSQM. “It is fabulous to see such an increase in the engagement of children and involvement of parents, with children, parents and staff being engaged by a range of enrichment activities and being fully informed by the “Friday Flyer” about the science that is going on in the different year groups.”

The reviewer praised the way the school had engaged the whole community in the science curriculum, “It is evident that great thought has been put into how to engage all learners which has resulted in an increase in the involvement of families, and a range of engaging activities such as those planned for British Science Week. Excitement about the ‘Borrow the Moon’ initiative also helped parents to understand the science vision and principles at St Dominic’s School and children to see more connections with science and their own lives.”

The reviewer also acknowledged the development of resources which encouraged pupils to ask questions and use scientific vocabulary. They praised how much the profile of science has been raised in such a short space of time: “Great progress has been made this year. Congratulations to you all on achieving the Primary Science Quality Mark.”
