Leigh Edser, Principal of Dysart School, has contributed to an article entitled ‘How can special and mainstream schools work together?’ in the 27th January issue of TES magazine.

Leigh talks about setting up Discovery House, the school’s third satellite provision, to meet growing demand for specialist places in the local area.
Discovery House is co-located on the site of Latchmere Primary School and is a model of collaboration between a mainstream and special school.

Leigh says: “We have 25 pupils on site, and we’re meeting all their needs really well. We access the mainstream school provisions where appropriate but it has to be done in collaboration and it has to be done with the children’s needs at the heart of decision making.”

She also says: “It’s also important to note that we are sharing expertise two ways. Our children deserve to have access to the best, so this is opening closed doors and moving away from working in silos.”
