Writing a match report

Dream Job Experience Day at Twickenham Stoop

Two lucky students, Katrina and Kieron, both currently studying at Carew Academy Sixth Form were given the opportunity to try out their dream jobs as part of The Harlequins Foundation “Take over” Day. The event took place at the Twickenham Stoop, home ground for Harlequins who were playing against Exeter Chiefs in a league match.

Pre kick off, Katrina, a budding journalist was introduced to Nick Rewcastle, Communications Manager at Harlequins and was given access to the pre-match media room where she met a group of heavyweight sporting journos, including the legendary Stephen Jones, who writes for the Sunday Times sports pages. Stephen kindly spent time with Katrina coaching her on how to write a great match report – advice that proved invaluable during the match! Katrina was then invited to sit on the press bench where the live broadcast commentary takes place (otherwise known as the best seats in the house).

Whilst Katrina was avidly writing notes and enjoying the view from the media bench, Kieron was pitch-side shadowing a professional Getty sports photographer, they took action photos of the match which were beamed up to the media bench to be instantaneously published on the real-time match twitter feed.

The match was a nail biting thriller, but the mighty Quins took the victory in extra time.

Katrina summed up the experience saying: ‘It was the best Saturday of my life’ and Kieron said he learnt so much about sports photography and the specialist lenses and equipment needed to get the perfect shot.

Thank you so much to Harlequins and The Harlequins Foundation who were so generous with their time and literally made two students’ dreams come true.
