It’s been an emotional week for students and staff at Carew Academy as they prepared to say goodbye to the school building that has given them so many happy memories over the last 12 years as Carew Academy and 63 years as Carew Manor School.

Students and staff filled a time capsule with their memories, farewell messages and final reflections from their time at Carew Academy (Church Road). Mavis Peart OBE, parent of a former student and long serving Chair of Governors added a personal letter reflecting the amazing opportunities that Carew offered students during her term and in the years to follow. The capsule will be buried in the school grounds for future generations to discover.

School Gates

Over the years students at Carew Academy have created stunning gate displays to celebrate important events proudly sharing their creativity with the local community.

These displays have been met with widespread praise even earning a letter of appreciation from Sir David Attenborough for a special display dedicated to his birthday. Their final gate display reflected on the past and provided a glimpse of the future. Students were given the chance to capture a photo of their most cherished memory of the school – whether it was their first classroom, a spot were they made a life-long friend, a proud achievement, a calming view or a place where they felt most at home. A fitting way to say goodbye.

Project Butterfly

The school have been using the metaphor of butterflies to help the students transition to the new school building, so it seemed only fitting for students to observe the lifecycle of butterflies in real life. Each class received a butterfly garden school kit, and they nurtured caterpillars until they were ready to be released in the school gardens on the last day – symbolising flying off to new beginnings.

Staff formed procession at the gates to wave off students as they completed their last school day, and finally when Friday drew to a close staff gathered for one last photo and three cheers to a building they will never forget.
